Types of Houses in English: Vocabulary for Homes

Where do you live? Learn English words for different types of homes, from small cottages to huge mansions, in one quick video.

When people talk about where they live, they rarely just say 'a house'. English has many specific words for different types of homes, and knowing them helps you describe your life more clearly. In this video, you will compare the general word 'a house' with four more specific types. An 'apartment' is a set of rooms inside a larger building. In British English, people often call it a 'flat'. A 'bungalow' is a house with only one floor, popular with families and older people who prefer no stairs. A 'cottage' is a small, cosy house, usually in the countryside, often with a garden. A 'mansion' is a very large and expensive house, the kind you might see in films or wealthy neighbourhoods. Remember to use 'an' before 'apartment' because it begins with a vowel sound. These words are useful when renting a place, talking about travel, or describing your dream home. Try answering: Do you live in a house or an apartment? Would you rather live in a cottage or a mansion? Watch the video, repeat the words, and practice using them in sentences to grow your everyday English vocabulary.
