Money and Business Abbreviations in English
Money and business conversations are full of abbreviations. Understanding them helps you read the news, manage your finances and communicate at work. In this video, you will learn six essential ones. 'ATM' stands for Automated Teller Machine, the machine where you withdraw cash. 'PIN' means Personal Identification Number, the secret code for your bank card. Many people say 'PIN number', even though the N already means number. 'ROI' stands for Return On Investment, a business term that measures how much profit you make compared to what you spent. 'VAT' means Value Added Tax, a tax added to products and services in many countries, especially in Europe. 'USD' stands for United States Dollar, the currency code used in finance and travel. 'GDP' means Gross Domestic Product, the total value of goods and services a country produces, often used to measure its economy. Notice that some are pronounced letter by letter, like A-T-M and G-D-P, while 'PIN' is said as a word. VAT can be said either way. Watch the video, repeat each abbreviation and its meaning, and look for them in news articles, receipts and business emails.
