Basic vs Advanced English: Making Suggestions

Make suggestions politely and confidently. Learn five advanced English alternatives to basic phrases like let's and you should.

Making suggestions is part of daily life, from planning a weekend with friends to proposing ideas at work. In this video, you will learn five advanced ways to suggest things politely. Instead of 'let's', try 'shall we', which sounds friendly and invites agreement: Shall we start? Instead of 'we can', say 'we could', which sounds less direct and more open to other ideas. Replace 'how about' with 'what if', a creative way to introduce a new idea: What if we tried a different approach? Instead of 'maybe', use 'perhaps', which is a little more formal and polished. Finally, swap 'you should' for 'you might want to'. This is one of the most useful polite phrases in English because it gives advice without sounding bossy: You might want to check the figures again. Native speakers often soften suggestions like this, especially at work, to avoid sounding too direct. Using these phrases will help you sound diplomatic, respectful and confident. Watch the video, notice the tone and gestures, and repeat each pair. Then practice by suggesting plans for this weekend using the advanced version of each phrase.
