What to Say When You Have a Bad Phone Connection
We have all been there: you are on an important call and suddenly the other person's voice breaks up or disappears. Knowing what to say in English helps you stay calm and fix the problem quickly. In this video, you will learn five natural phrases native speakers use when the phone connection is poor. Start with 'I think the line's cutting out.' This tells the other person the signal is weak without blaming anyone. Then use 'Sorry, could you repeat that?' to politely ask for missed information. If the voice is too soft, say 'You're a bit quiet on my end.' The expression 'on my end' is very common in phone English and means 'on my side of the call'. When there is noise around you or them, say 'There's some background noise.' Finally, ask 'Would you mind speaking a little louder?' This is a polite request that never sounds demanding. These phrases work for personal calls, video meetings and customer service calls. Watch the video, notice the intonation, and repeat each line out loud. Next time your call gets choppy, you will know exactly what to say and sound natural, polite and in control.
