Religions and Their Followers in English
Talking about culture and beliefs is an important part of communication, especially when you travel, meet new people or read about world history. In English, the name of a religion and the name of its followers are often different, so learners sometimes mix them up. In this short video, you will learn seven pairs with clear pronunciation. Islam is the religion, and its followers are Muslims. Christianity is the religion, and its followers are Christians. Judaism is the religion, and its followers are Jews, or you can use the adjective Jewish, as in Jewish people. Hinduism is the religion, and its followers are Hindus. Buddhism is the religion, and its followers are Buddhists. Taoism is the religion, and its followers are Taoists. And Shinto is the religion, and its followers are often called Shintoists. Remember that in English, religions and their followers always start with a capital letter. Many follower names end in ist or ian, which can help you remember them. This vocabulary is useful for school, history and geography lessons, news articles and respectful conversations about culture. Watch the video, repeat each pair and practice using them in sentences. You will talk about beliefs clearly and respectfully.
