Types of Chairs in English: Learn the Right Word
Many English learners use the word 'chair' for every kind of seat, but native speakers have specific words for different types. Learning them will make your English more precise and natural. In this video, you will hear the basic word 'a chair' compared with four more specific words. A 'stool' is a seat without a back or arms, often found at a kitchen counter or bar. A 'bench' is a long seat for two or more people, common in parks, gyms and train stations. An 'armchair' is a comfortable chair with supports for your arms, usually found in a living room. A 'sofa', also called a 'couch' in American English, is a large soft seat for several people. Notice the article 'an' before 'armchair' because it starts with a vowel sound. Try describing your home or office using these words: How many chairs do you have? Is there a stool in your kitchen? Do you prefer an armchair or a sofa? Watch the video, repeat each word with the right pronunciation, and start using precise vocabulary in your daily conversations. Small vocabulary upgrades like these help you sound more fluent and confident in English.
