Polite or Uncertain? Fix These Common English Phrases
Many learners try to be extra polite in English, but some phrases go too far and make them sound uncertain or lacking confidence. In this video, you will learn three common examples and better alternatives. Instead of 'Sorry for bothering you', say 'Do you have a minute to discuss this?' The first phrase suggests your question is a problem. The second is polite, respectful of the person's time, and confident. Instead of 'I just wanted to ask', try 'I'd like to ask about...' The word 'just' makes your request sound small and unimportant. 'I'd like to' is polite and direct. Instead of 'I hope you don't mind', use 'Would you be open to...?' The first phrase sounds nervous, as if you expect a negative reaction. The second invites the person to consider your idea in a positive way. The key lesson is that politeness and confidence can go together. You do not need to apologize to be respectful. These phrases are useful when talking to managers, clients, teachers or anyone you want to impress. Watch the video, repeat each pair, and notice how much stronger the new versions sound.
