Short U vs Long U: Cup, Cube, Cut and Cute
English spelling and pronunciation do not always match, but some patterns are very helpful. One of the most useful is the silent E rule. When a word ends in a silent E, the vowel before it often changes from a short sound to a long sound. In this video, you will practice five pairs with the letter U. 'Cup', with a short uh sound, becomes 'cube', pronounced kyoob. 'Cut' becomes 'cute', and 'luck' compares with 'Luke'. Other pairs, like 'bun' and 'boon' or 'dull' and 'duel', show the same contrast between the short uh sound and the longer oo sound. These pairs are called minimal pairs because only one sound changes, but the meaning is completely different. Mixing them up can cause confusion: imagine saying 'that's a cut baby' instead of 'that's a cute baby'! Practicing minimal pairs is one of the best ways to train your ear and mouth at the same time. Watch the video, listen carefully to each pair, and repeat them slowly, then faster. Record yourself and compare your pronunciation with the video. With regular practice, these vowel sounds will become clear and natural.
