Numbers: Single to Decuple
English has specific words for describing multiples of numbers, beyond the basic counting numbers, and this lesson covers ten of them in order. One corresponds to single, two to double, and three to triple, words most English speakers already recognize from everyday use. From there, the pattern continues: four is quadruple, five is quintuple, and six is sextuple. Continuing further, seven is septuple, eight is octuple, nine is nonuple, and ten is decuple. While the first three, single, double, and triple, are extremely common in everyday English, the later terms become increasingly rare in casual conversation but still appear in academic, legal, and technical contexts. Learning this full sequence helps you recognize the pattern behind these words, since most follow a similar structure based on Latin number roots. Practicing this list will help you both recognize and correctly pronounce these terms when you encounter them.
