Irregular Plurals in English: Mouse, Foot and More
In English, most nouns become plural by adding s, like cat and cats. But some very common words follow different rules, and these irregular plurals often cause mistakes. In this video, you will learn six important ones. 'Mouse' becomes 'mice', for both animals and, often, computer mice. 'Foot' becomes 'feet', and 'goose' becomes 'geese'. Notice the same pattern: the double o changes to double e. 'Person' becomes 'people', which is the normal plural in everyday English. 'Persons' exists, but it is very formal and mostly used in legal language. 'Leaf' becomes 'leaves' and 'loaf' becomes 'loaves'. Many nouns ending in f or fe change to ves in the plural, like knife and knives or wife and wives. These words are used every day, so getting them right makes your English sound much more natural. A common mistake is saying 'foots' or 'peoples', so practice the correct forms until they feel automatic. Watch the video, follow the gestures, and repeat each pair out loud. Then try making sentences with the plural forms, like: There are two mice in the kitchen and leaves on the floor.
