How to Politely Interrupt Someone in English
In meetings and group conversations, it can be hard to find the right moment to speak, especially in a second language. Sometimes you need to interrupt, and doing it politely is a valuable skill. In this video, you will learn three phrases to avoid and their polite alternatives. Instead of 'Wait, let me talk!', say 'Sorry to interrupt, may I add something?' Starting with an apology softens the interruption and shows respect. Instead of 'You're talking too much', try 'Can I share my thoughts for a moment?' This asks for space without criticizing the other person. And when someone interrupts you, instead of 'Let me finish!', say 'If I may just finish my point...' This sounds calm and confident, and helps you keep control of the conversation politely. Notice how all three alternatives use polite structures like 'may I', 'can I' and 'if I may'. These are very common in professional English. Practicing them will help you participate more actively in meetings, debates and discussions. Watch the video, repeat each phrase with a calm tone, and try using one the next time you need to speak up.
