Better Ways to Start an Email in English
The first line of an email sets the tone for the whole message. Many learners start every email with 'I'm writing to...', which is correct but can sound repetitive and old-fashioned. In this video, you will learn five modern, natural alternatives. First, 'Just a quick note to...' This is friendly and perfect for short messages: Just a quick note to say thanks. Second, 'Following up on our last discussion...' Use this after a meeting or call to continue the conversation. Third, 'I wanted to check in about...' This is a soft, polite way to ask for an update. Fourth, 'Reaching out to confirm...' This works well for appointments, orders and plans. Fifth, 'As discussed, here's the update...' This is direct and efficient, ideal for sending information people are expecting. Choosing the right opener shows that you understand the context and respect the reader's time. It also makes your emails sound more natural and confident. Notice that many of these phrases drop the subject 'I', which is common in modern business emails. Watch the video, repeat each opener, and try using a different one in each email you send this week.
