Better Words for Dirty: Funny English Vocabulary
Dirty' is a basic word that works, but native speakers usually describe exactly what kind of dirt they see. In this funny video, one speaker keeps saying 'dirty' and the other responds with better words and some cheeky comments. Shoes covered in wet earth are 'muddy'. A pan covered in oil or fat is 'greasy'. A bookshelf covered in fine grey powder is 'dusty'. A shirt with a mark from coffee or sauce is 'stained'. And a desk with papers and objects everywhere is 'messy'. Notice that 'messy' does not always mean dirty. It means untidy or disorganized. Many of these adjectives come from nouns: mud becomes muddy, grease becomes greasy, dust becomes dusty. This is a common pattern in English, and once you notice it you can understand many new words. Try describing your home: Is your car dusty? Are your shoes muddy after the rain? Is your desk messy right now? Watch the video, laugh along with the jokes, and repeat each word. Precise words like these make your English more colourful, and humour helps you remember new vocabulary much more easily.
