Correct Verbs for Chores in English

Learn the right verbs for daily chores so your English sounds natural and clear in everyday conversations at home.

Using the correct verbs for common household chores is an easy way to sound more natural and fluent in English. Many learners mistakenly say wash for almost every task, but native speakers use different verbs depending on the action. Mastering these small differences helps you communicate more accurately in daily life.

For example, we do not say wash the floor. Instead, the correct verb is mop the floor, because you use a mop, not water and soap alone. Similarly, we do the dishes, not wash the dishes, because this expression refers to the entire task of cleaning up after eating.

When talking about vehicles, English uses clean the car rather than wash the car in everyday conversation. This verb sounds more natural and includes both washing the outside and tidying the inside. For hands, however, we use rinse your hands when you are quickly cleaning them with water, especially during cooking or after touching something messy.

Learning these common verb–noun combinations will help you sound more fluent and confident when talking about chores, routines, and everyday activities.
