How to Ask for Help Professionally at Work

Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Learn four simple steps to ask colleagues for support in English.

Asking for help at work can feel uncomfortable, especially in a second language. However, knowing how to ask professionally shows maturity and helps you get better results. In this short video, you will learn a simple four step structure with natural English phrases. First, start with the situation. Be honest but polite. For example, I've been reviewing this report, and I'm a bit stuck on the data analysis part. Second, make a clear request so the other person knows exactly what you need. For example, Could you please help me understand how you approached this in the last project? Third, show appreciation for their time and knowledge. For example, I really value your expertise, it'll help me get this right. Finally, end positively and show that you will follow up. For example, Thanks so much for taking the time. I'll make sure to update you once it's done. This structure makes your request clear, respectful and easy to say yes to. It works with colleagues, managers and even clients, in person, by email or in chat messages. Watch the video, notice each step and practice adapting the phrases to your own job. With this structure, asking for help will feel natural and professional.
