AIR Sound vs EER Sound: Hair, Hear, Fair and Fear

Hair or hear? Fair or fear? Learn to pronounce the AIR and EER sounds clearly with four English minimal pairs.

Some English vowel sounds are very close, and the AIR and EER sounds are a great example. Mixing them up can change the meaning of your sentence, so it is worth practicing. In this video, you will learn four minimal pairs: 'hair' and 'hear', 'pair' and 'peer', 'fair' and 'fear', and 'where' and 'weir'. The AIR sound starts with your mouth more open, like in the word 'bed', then moves toward a soft r. The EER sound starts with your mouth more closed and smiling, like in the word 'see', then moves to the same soft r. Notice that the spelling does not always help. 'Where' and 'hair' have the AIR sound with very different spellings, while 'hear' and 'peer' share the EER sound. This is why listening practice is so important. Think about how confusing it could be to say 'I fair the exam' instead of 'I fear the exam'. A 'weir', by the way, is a small wall built across a river to control water. Watch the video, look at the mouth shape, and repeat each pair slowly. Practice daily and your vowel sounds will become clearer and more natural.
